TV Review: Code Black

code black

Airs: Wednesdays at 10/9c on CBS

Review: Pilot

When I watched the trailer for this show, it represented Code Black as a documentary.  This is not a documentary.  This is a drama in the mold of ER.  We follow first-year residents on their first day in the busiest ER in the country.  The show begins in Code Blue (no critical patients) and gradually escalates to the climax of the show with, you guessed it, Code Black (many critical patients).

Code Black does an excellent job of showing the chaos of what a real ER is like with lots of action.  This chaos comes at a cost, however, as the characters are completely lost in the frenzy.  I didn’t care about the doctors at all.  I didn’t care about the patients at all.  If I don’t care about the characters, why should I watch it?

Perhaps over time, you could begin to care about the doctors and perhaps even the patients, but in the meantime, I don’t care enough to stick around.

WWYT Rating: 5.0

Nielsen Rating: 1.5 This rating is borderline.  It is one of CBS’s lowest rated 10pm shows and definitely one of their lowest overall.  If this drops at all it will probably be cancelled.  Chance of renewal 45% (no initial)
