Airs: Mondays at 8/7c on NBC
I admit to having a bias against sitcoms. I like the com(edy) part, but I don’t like the sit(uation) part. I find the set ups (or the “situations”) to be completely ludicrous. This is coming from a guy who watches every sci-fi show he can find and reads primarily fantasy. I end up rolling my eyes at any sitcom even if there are funny moments.
Superstore stocked its cast with generic characters. They’re all there – the black guy in a wheelchair (a two-fer!), the wacky Asian guy, the ditzy blonde (though she isn’t a blonde), the idiot boss, and the butch lesbian. Only the two main characters are normal people. So it is no surprise that the jokes are rather generic as well.
There is nothing special about Superstore from the characters, to the setting, to the jokes. It wasn’t unfunny (like say Dr. Ken), there were some genuine funny moments, but there was nothing about the show that would compel me to watch it.
WWYT Rating: 5.0
Nielsen Rating: 1.7 – A solid premiere, but as always, how many people will tune in to watch a second and third episode? It has a generic appeal, so it might not lose many viewers, and at those numbers it will be the best rated comedy on NBC. Chance of renewal 75%
