The Good Place (9/19(?) @ 8:30/7:30c on NBC)
Premise: A woman dies and goes to heaven (aka The Good Place). Except she isn’t supposed to be there, because whoever they think she is, it isn’t her.
Reaction: Cute. Different (though it feels slightly familiar like a Heaven Can Wait or Oh God You Devil, even though it isn’t the same thing)
Star Power: 8 – Kirsten Bell and Ted Danson
Prediction: It isn’t off to a good start – the premiere date is NOT a Thursday. So they will premiere it on a different date, then move it to Thursday? Never good to confuse when your audience as to when it is on. Then they will have to compete with Thursday Night Football, the Shonda night on ABC, and though not directly competing with The Big Bang Theory, it’s up against really stiff competition. It might be too much to ask, even if it is good (and I give it a 50/50 shot). Chance of renewal 25%
Notorious (9/22 @ 9/8c on ABC)
Premise: I’m not sure. A defense attorney and TV news producer are romantically involved and use each other to advance their careers?
Reaction: Are these anti-heroes? Even while watching just the trailer, I didn’t I like the lead characters. That is never a good sign. Plus, I am confused as to what the show is about. Strike two.
Star Power: 5 – The guy from Graceland, the woman from Coyote Ugly/Covert Affairs [A terrible actress, IMO – strike three for me]
Prediction: What a gift of a timeslot, on Shonda night between Grey’s Anatomy and How to Get Away with Murder. The quality won’t matter too much; it should do just fine as a placeholder until Scandal returns. After that I don’t know what happens. Chance of renewal 65%.
Pitch (9/22 @ 9/8c on FOX)
Premise: A female pitcher with a devastating screwball joins the major leagues.
Reaction: FOX should parlay this with the World Series. I wonder if this will feel gimmicky like Rookie of the Year or will it be more poignant like 42.
Star Power: 4 – Mark Paul Gosselaar (though I didn’t recognize him) and a couple other faces I recognize.
Prediction: I said last year that FOX is struggling. I’m not sure that this is the show to get them out of their doldrums (and it is definitely the wrong time slot). Chance of renewal 30%
The Great Indoors (10/27 @ 8:30/7:30c on CBS)
Premise: Legendary outdoorsman returns to help run a magazine.
Reaction: I’m all for mocking Millennials, but not sure that is the best plan for getting ratings in the 18-49 demo.
Star Power: 5 – Joel McHale
Prediction: The downside is the late premier date. The upside is the timeslot after The Big Bang Theory. Last year CBS pushed the show that was meant to follow TBBT to January. It failed miserably. They probably won’t make that mistake again. Chance of renewal 55%
Pure Genius (10/27 @ 10/9c on CBS)
Premise: Medical drama matching cutting edge technology with cutting edge medicine.
Reaction: Looks like a regular medical drama, but with technology
Star Power: 5 – Dermot Mulroney (he has 96 credits on IMDB)
Prediction: Another late premiere. I’m not sure it is unique enough to really separate itself from the pack to get renewed. Chance of renewal 45%
