TV Review: Conviction

Airs: Mondays 10/9c on ABC

Review: Pilot

Time Travel. Heaven exists, but only allows 352 people in it. The government is completely destroyed leaving only one survivor. A cartoon tries to get more involved in his live-action son’s life. These are just some of the absurd premises that have aired so far this year. Yet all of them are infinitely more believable than the premise for Conviction.

Hayes Morrison is the former First Daughter, and a colossal screw up. After being arrested for cocaine possession, she gets a high profile, important position leading the Conviction Integrity Unit. Apparently because nothing says integrity like cocaine possession. For all her faults she has a brilliant legal mind. Which only makes the premise worse – why does she act like this? The cocaine arrest was not the first time she had been arrested. Further, why does the DA even want her to run the unit? It would only be a matter of time before she gets arrested again and embarrasses him and his department.

Unlikable characters with questionable motivation and an impossible premise makes Conviction difficult to watch. I’m not sure anyone can get past such an idiotic concept and there isn’t enough to Conviction to want to get past it.

WWYT Rating: 4.1

Nielsen Rating: 0.9 If it premieres less than 1.0 it is almost certainly going to be cancelled, and with quality like this, it deserves it. Chance of renewal 10% (down from 15%).
