TV Review: The Muppets

Muppets

Airs: Tuesdays at 8/7c on ABC

This is what I was afraid of when I saw the trailer.  The Muppets is a regular sitcom (in a mockumentary format) that stars the Muppets.  While all the same characters are there, I was hoping for the light-hearted Muppet Show that I grew up with.  That is not what I got.  Instead, it’s a run-of-the-mill sitcom.  The jokes were crude and violent.  The situations were adult – Kermit and Miss Piggy learning how to work together after breaking up.

There were some funny moments, led by Animal and the rest of the band.  But, the rest of the show was painful to watch.  Bring back my Muppets!  For those longing for the Muppets of old here is a clip:

And because you can’t have one without the other

(Only Michigan fans will understand that last reference – you’ll just have to deal with it).

WWYT Rating: 4.0 (though that may be the disappointment talking).

Nielsen Ratings: 2.8 The ratings are not as high as I thought they would be (I expected well over 3.0).  I think people will settle into two camps, the first will find the change refreshing.  Others, like myself, will pine for the good ole days and not like the reboot.  With a lower than expected starting point and a pilot that turned off some viewers I will lower my chance of renewal to 50% (Initial Projection 70%)
